2013 Vuelta – Stage 19 – That Just Happened

RodriguezVuelta

Ahead of tomorrow’s crazy penultimate stage up the Alto d’Angliru, Chris Horner has grabbed 6 more seconds on a crumbling Vincenzo Nibali to claim the leader’s Red Jersey. Today’s uphill finish was won by Joaquim Rodriguez who made a last ditch effort to close the gap to the leader’s before tomorrow’s stage and he attacked from the favorites with just over 1 km to go. Behind, the top three of Horner, Nibali and Valverde were playing tactical games seeing if they could dislodge one another and it eventually happened with Valverde and Horner dropping Nibali in the final meters, but it proved to be enough to claim the jersey.

Not much to be said before the Angliru. With only 3 seconds separating Nibali and Horner, it’s wide open for whoever does better on the day. At this point it looks impossible that Horner won’t best Nibali, but Angliru is so steep, and so viscous it is more about just the legs than it is about tactics, gearing and smarts. The gap between the top four is not so great that someone may surprise, but for sure, it is hard to believe that, at this point, somehow, someway a 42 year old is primed to win the Vuelta.
