2013 Vuelta – Stage 12 – Showing form

A very technical finish on the sprint stage into Tarragona, in fact so much so, that the race officials moved the neutralized zone for time gaps from the final 3km out to the final 5km. Tony Martin got things started as the peloton was nervous, attacking with 14km remaining and instantly opened up 10 bikes lengths as the teams behind were uncertain about chasing. However, with 10km to go Martin was reeled in by some determined sprint trains.

Until the 5km remaining banner the GC teams were controlling the front keeping their GC guys safe. Inside the final kilometers there were so many barriers, round-abouts and obstructions it is a relief that everyone made it through safely. With the final 1km uphill ramp, Edvald Boassen Hagen lauched with 300m to go and had a large gap but faded at the end while a perfectly timed sprint from the World Champion Philippe Gilbert came around an took the win.

No big changes in the overall, but Ivan Basso and Nicolas Roche both picked up bonus seconds on the stage (3″ and 2″ respectively) to improve their positions ever so slightly. Tomorrow’s stage is not unlike today’s and could be another opportunity for the Rainbow stripes.
