2013 Vuelta – Stage 8 – Small group, big ambitions

KonigVuelta

The second decisive mountain stage of the race ran today on just the 8th stage of the Vuelta with the peloton riding to the Andalucian town of Estepona and finishing on the mountain climb to Alto Peñas Blancas. The blistering hot day was a major barrier for all the teams with riders dousing themselves with water trying to keep the effects of the sun off.

On the final climb, with 8km to go Roman Kreuziger was the first rider to crack. Just 700m later, Bauke Mollema surprisingly cracked from the leaders. Radioshack was leading the selection up the final climb and setting a strong pace and they finally reeled in the break of Nerz (BMC) and Cataldo (SKY) with 5km to go. With 4.6km to go Igor Anton attacked the group and looked strong going in pursuit of the win.

In the last 1.5km Ivan Basso, Leopold Konig, Dani Moreno, Thibault Pinot and Nicolas Roche went in pursuit of Igor Anton and it was Konig who was able to break away from the pursuers and best Anton for the win.
