2013 Vuelta – Stage 5 – Parts of Spain are Flat

The first of the sprinters stages today as the Vuelta said adios to Galicia and plunged into Castilla y Leon finishing at Lago de Sanabria. The true sprinters had some serious work to do today not only reeling in the 5 man break containing Edet, Van De Walle, Courteille and Piedra, but also expending quite some energy getting over the climbs to get to the finish. But, for the fast men, they must have been relieved that finally there was a flat finish in the Vuelta.

With 3.2km remaining Tony Martin gobbled up the break with ease ripping through the windy roads in time trial fashion. However, immediately after the break was caught Martin eased the pace allowing Pablo Urtasan (EUS) to launch a doomed counter attack which only provided the carrot, colour and all, for Argos-Shimano to go after. The peloton roared to the right and over a narrow bridge and it was Michael Matthews launching past Philippe Gilbert with 200 to go and holding off Gianni Meersman and Maximiliano Richeze to take the win.
