2013 Vuelta – Stage 3 – Three for Three

In another dramatic stage filled with crashes, splits and wind the Vuelta ratcheted up the excitement only to have the favorites stare each other down at the finish and let another rider take advantage as no one seemed eager to go. Chris Horner attacked with 1 km to go, blew past Ivan Santaromita (BMC) and hung on to take the stage as Alejandro Valverde and Joaquim Rodriguez were closing quickly.

For Horner, the stage win not only brings immediate success to the team for the stage win, but it also transfers the responsibility of carrying the Red jersey to Radioshack. The Shack seems ready for the task as Fabian Cancellara earlier in the day was already calling the shots during highly tense moments following a crash that resulted in a large split that Astana, Cannondale and Movistar looked resistant to slowing for. Eventually, the teams eased and everyone got back together for the finishing climb which saw Horner ride away and grab the win and the red jersey for our third leader in three days of racing.
