2013 Tour – Stage 19 – Double da Costa

Rui Costa has won his second stage of the Tour de France. Again winning solo from the break with a minute over the nearest competitor.

The day began with a huge break of 40 riders getting away from the peloton and really pushing the pace, when Ryder Hesjedal went off in search of long range glory. Joining him was Pierre Rolland who was in search of Polka Dot points and he gobbled up enough to move himself into second place before the final climb. Both Rolland and the break were working hard and kept the hard charging peloton at bay and then the clouds opened up.

Suddenly, the first real rain of the Tour had arrived, and that caused a lot of riders to suffer. In front, Rui Costa set off and caught Rolland, in search of his second win. Behind him, the break was thinned all over the mountain. Behind, in the peloton, Saxo Bank continued on with Sky’s resources diminished to just Porte and Froome. But the pace they were putting in was much more reserved in the rain.

With 14km remaining for the leaders, Movistar was active all over the road. Costa was off the front with a minute of the chasers. Behind, Valverde attacked the peloton with about 18km remaining and John Gadret bridged across to join him but the duo were struggling to make a large gap. Then Joaquim Rodriguez, Contador and Quintana attacked, and joined Valverde with the four working ferociously to make a gap. Richie Porte was blown and Froome was isolated as he was working against the Spaniards and Colombian. However, on the descent, the favorites grouped together but Valverde and Gadret were let loose, only later to be caught right at the line by the favorites. Tomorrow is the last Mountain stage, and the last chance for any changes.
