2013 Tour – Stage 2 – 1 is the only number

BakelandtsTour

Jan Bakelandts (RLT) surprised the peloton on a day in which I would have expected everyone in the group to have the bit between the teeth. Due to the craziness of yesterday every rider in the group had the same time. Today, with a nearly 1200m cat 2 climb in the center of the stage, as well as a 1km climb at 9% coming 12km from the finish, and one rider only needing a 1 second gap to take yellow, I expected pandemonium. Well, Bakelandts got the 1 second gap, but the pandemonium just wasn’t there. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that last bit as the opportunity to take yellow on even time is so rare in a TdF that usually the riders cannot contain themselves. Today, not only did that exist but half the sprinters and the peloton was absent due to the climb. This was a domestiques dream day!

The whole selection was together at the base of the final climb, with the autobus of sprinters, nd yellow jersey, over 10 minutes behind, when Juan Antonio Flecha went for broke. Cyril Gauthier joined him and gave it a strong dig making a sizeable gap which Chris Froome (huh, why?) tried to chase down and looked silly doing so. The group reeled Froome back within 1.5km and caught Gauthier with 6 to go. Then Flecha went again with Chavanel, Bakelandts, Izaguirre, Monfort, and Fuglsang to make a drive for the line. Behind, the peloton looked hesitant and Peter Sagan impatient as he saw n easy opportunity for the win and green jersey points. In front, with Bakelandts fresh of his turn, the break was passive as well and Jan just looked back and kept riding. 1 second was the only gap any rider needed. As the peloton came crushing down on him he held to the line and got the gap, the win and the yellow jersey.
