Stage 8 – 54.8km TT – Mighty have fallen

DowsettGiro

Today was the very decisive 55km individual time trial on the stage which was certain to reshape the top ten and put some mighty gaps into the group. No longer do we see 3 or 10 second gaps as the top riders have put half minute gaps into the competition. The big question was: could Wiggins get  back into the top ten with his ride today, and he answered that famously leaping up to fourth.

Three notable riders had bad days: The Maglia Rosa – Benat Intzausti, who isn’t a bad timetrialer plummeted to 14th in the standings and came in nearly 4 minutes behind the competition. Ryder Hesjedal, the defending champion, also lost a ton of time to his rivals dropping from 3rd to 6th being beat by over two minutes by Wiggins, and he was even handily beaten by Michele Scaponi. Lastly, Samuel Sanchez had a brutal day as well, losing over three minutes and demonstrating that breaking the top ten would be an accomplishment as he appears to be lacking the form to keep up.
