2013 Giro – Stage 3 – Classics winner on a classic stage

Luca Paolini (KAT) has won the 3rd stage of the Giro while also grabbing the Maglia Rosa for the lead of the race. Paolini, who is only participating in his second Giro brought his classics skills and smarts to attack in the last 6km and win the stage. The day was heavily animated by Ryder Hesjedal as he continuously pushed on up the final climb and then harder on the descent. His aggression caused all sorts of drama for the other GC contenders as there were numerous crashes including Michele Scarponi +1’00” and GC contenders being caught out (Henao+36″, Visconti, Betancur, Pozzovivo +50″). Hesjedal also grabbed 8 bonus seconds on the line finishing in third.

Tomorrow is another tough stage and the longest of this years Giro and if the aggression today is any indication of what’s to come it should be a good one. Garmin and the other teams seem eager to push Sky and not allow them to organize, but it’s early and Sky doesn’t want to control anyway, so we’ll get another glimpse at whether it’s tactic or circumstance tomorrow.
