2013 Giro – Stage 1 – No Surprises, Radiohead

That’s what the Omega-Pharma Quickstep team could be listening to in the team bus after today’s stage as for the third time in his career Mark Cavendish is wearing the pink jersey after winning stage 1. Cavendish would have been the odds on bet, no doubt, but that doesn’t mean it would be easy and today’s win was a demonstration of that. With a crash in the final 3km that caught out all but about 20 men, it was no smooth finish. As well, Gert Steegmans has a problem with his shifting, again, and Cav had to close a resulting gap on his own. Lastly, Orica led out Matt Goss perfectly – who is no slouch in the sprints (or at least who used to be no slouch… what was that today?) – and Cavendish had to come from four back to win with only Viviani proving to be a willing combatant.

Stage 1 Top Five

1. Mark Cavendish (OPQ)

2. Elia Viviani (CAN)

3. Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ)

4. Giacomo Nizzolo (RNT)

5. Matt Goss (OGE)

Tomorrow is the TTT and we wait to see just how much time Sky puts into everyone else. Samuel, sorry bro, expect to lose one and a half minutes. Although I find the TTT aesthetically beautiful, I somewhat dislike it as team budget often is far too influential on success. But I’m not watching anyway I’m going camping.
