We’ve welcomed 2013 from Madrid with open arms, as it’s finally brought us some sun and blue skies after the fog and cold we had upon arrival. We still have to bundle up at night to cope with the chilly January nights and below 0 ºC nightly temperatures that are so common in central Spain during this time of the year — and we do this to much local dismay and mockery, as everyone here finds it hard to believe that nights here much colder than in Vancouver. But, in any case, these sunny days of the New Year have been perfect for our incursions into the city for cañas and tapas and our first bike explorations on the Anillo Verde Ciclista, a network of 64 km of bike paths surrounding Madrid and connecting with some nearby suburbs.
We are now hoping to keep riding through 2013 to get rid of the excess of jamón, hot chocolate and roscón de Reyes we’ve already packed in our bodies after only our first week here, and are preparing our packs and bikes again for some riding in the north of Spain. We’re hoping to test our new jerseys and some new products we brought with us fresh from the oven. More on that to come.
Happy New Year everyone!
