Alexandre Vinokourov with a Golden End to Career

Alexandre Vinokourov (Kasakhstan) has won the Olympic Road Race taking Gold for his native Kazakhstan attacking his breakmate Rigoberto Uran (Columbia) within the final kilometer of the 255km race into London. The race, which was billed as a near certain victory for Mark Cavendish (Great Britain) if he could reach the line with the lead group, turned out as many expected with a select group attacking the Great Britain team on the last ascent of box hill.

The lead group was filled with elite talent having Phillipe Gilbert (BEL), Fabian Cancellara (SUI), Alejandro Valverde (SPA), Sylvain Chavanel (FRA), Taylor Phinney (USA) and Lars Boom (USA) amongst others but with about 10km to go disaster struck the Swiss team as Fabian Cancellara completely overshot a right hand turn off the front and went headfirst into the barriers appearing to injure his shoulder or re-injure his collarbone. The break powered on as the British team behind realized that they were going to be unable to catch the leaders and it was Vinokourov and Rigoberto Uran who attacked the front group with some 3km remaining and were able to hold them off to ride the Gold and Silver. Alexandre Kristoff won the sprint for Bronze beating out US former track sprinter Taylor Phinney. Now the questions is: Will Vino retire? Or will he ride next year in Gold?
