Tour de France – Stage 8 – Pinot Grand

Thibault Pinot (FDJ) has ridden the race of his young career, winning the 8th stage of the Tour de France near his home region, in front of hordes of his supporters. Outspoken Director Sportif, and two-time Paris-Roubaix winner, Marc Madiot also survived the breakaway and surprisingly did not spontaneously explode in the team car as many feared. The 22 year old Pinot represents what the French see as a new era in French cycling. Madiot, and FDJ, have been annually heartbroken at the Tour with the last success coming for them nearly a decade ago.

The GC Contenders group has also been extremely selective on the day with splits all through the peloton on the Col de la Croix. The biggest surprise today was Samuel Sanchez and Alejandro Valverde crashing with a spectator and Sanchez going down with a broken collarbone. This ended Samuels Tour and his attempt to defend his Olympic title. Absolutely gutting is this year’s Tour for so many riders, with so many crashes. I can’t remember it being this bad.

Tomorrow, the first long and important time trial of the Tour de France runs 41.6km. The leaderboard will really be clarified on who has the form and who is just hoping they can come around.
