Tour de France – Stage 5 – Greipel doubles up.

Andre Greipel has won two stages in a row beating Matt Goss, J.J. Haedo and Mark Cavendish to the line just overcoming Pablo Urtasun from the break within the final 250m. Again, there was another crash today coming into the final km which held up Peter Sagan who missed out of points for the green jersey.

The stage was a long, flat and straight one, without a hill in sight. The days break was lead by Matthieu Ladagnous (FDJ), Pablo Urtasun (EUS), Julien Simon (SAU) and Jan Ghyselink (COF) who built up a major lead as the peloton was rolling along at under 38kmph. With 7km to go the break had 40 seconds and they were doing a trememndous job of holding off the peloton as they had 17 seconds with 2 km to go. Then, just outside the final km Jan Ghyselink (COF) launched a promising looking attack but faltered on the slightly uphill finish to the line. Pablo Urtasun (EUS) countered and held the surging sprinters off until the final 200m where he was passed and dipped his head in heartbreak.

Tomorrow, is another flat-ish stage with a downhill finish for the sprinters. Expect a long break and a similar stage to today.
