Tour de Suisse – Stage 7 TT – Kessiakoff Wins, Costa in Yellow.

A long and very technical time trial today, which the course designer described as “not having a single meter that is straight or flat” made for some very large time gaps at the finish line. The stage was won by Sweden’s Fredrik Kessiakoff, who narrowly edged out timetrial and hometown favorite Fabian Cancellara by a mere two seconds. Rui Costa did well to not only protect his lead in the race, but he actually built on it now having 50seconds to work with vs 8 seconds. The big mover on the day was climbing sensation Robert Gesink, who has been working hard on his timetrialing and it shows, as he vaulted up to third pace with a very strong ride.

The Tour de Suisse finishes on Sunday and with two tough mountain stages to go, the GC is still quite wide open. I think Costa has this race in the bag at this point, but there is only 1 minute separating 2nd to 15th. The only mountain stage thus far – Verbier – saw Kangert finish +1’40”, Gesink +1’04”, Gusev +43″ and Fuglsang +37″ on a stage which Costa won. As well, there are 10, 6, and 4 seconds time bonuses, so we’ve got some racing to do!
