Stage of the Year? – Option #4 – Stage 20 Giro d’Italia

5 days following the tragic death of Movistar teammate Xavier Tondo in a freak accident, and after much debate whether Team Movistar would continue the race, Vasil Kiryienka joins a break 45km into the epic 242km stage, solos both the Finestre and the Sestriere and wins the stage. Over the 2178m of Finestre, with 8km of climbing 9% on dirt roads and an explosive battle for podium placings on the penultimate stage happening behind him, Kiryienka, driven by the emotional loss of team leader, flew through the stage winning by more than four and a half minutes.
