World TT Championships – Tony Martin crushes

Tony Martin (Germany) has absolutely destroyed the competition in the World Time Trial Championships to claim his first rainbow jersey. Martin passed David Millar (7th, +2’46”) before the midpoint of the event, and then passed Mikeal Ignatiev (22nd) before he completed the course with a commanding 1’15” lead on Bradley Wiggins with only Fabian Cancellara to finish. Spartacus… errr… Tony Montana, gave is his all to try and catch Tony Martin, but looked destined for silver as he trailed by nearly a minute into the final time check. However, Cancellara pushed harder against almost zero odds causing him to lose control and slide his bike around a corner just keeping it upright against the barriers. The impossible battle for first, cost Fabian second, and he finished with a bronze +1’21” behind Martin.

Judith Arndt (Germany) won yesterday for the Elite Women, with Linda Willumsen (New Zealand) and Emma Pooley (Britain) rounding off the podium. Clara Hughes (Canada) finished in 5th one spot behind fellow Canadian Tara Whitten, which is very impressive considering Hughes came out of retirement, due to focusing on Olympic Speed Skating, to secure a spot for the London Summer Olympic Time Trial.
