La Vuelta – Stage 14 – Rein in Spain, Nibali in Pain

The monster weekend in the Vuelta España got off to a frightening start for some of the big contenders. Rein Taaramae (Cofidis) found himself in the breakaway with David De La Fuente (Geox) and managed to power his way on to the win. Taaramae, looked to have a battler with him in De La Fuente until Geox ordered the Spaniard to hold up and wait for their emerging leader Juan Jose Cobo who was the big GC winner on the day.

The finishing climb to Lagos de Somiedo went up like an exponential curve becoming more steep toward the end. For Bradley Wiggins this was the ideal format as he and Chris Froome hammered at a high pace on the front destroying the rest of the GC competition, and putting massive time into Vincenzo Nibali, Joaquim Rodriguez and Jacob Fuglsang. An effort like this today may backfire on Wiggins as tomorrow Angliru looms on the horizon and with it’s incredibly steep sections and numerous ramps Wiggins will be far, far out of his comfort zone.
