Critérium du Dauphiné – Stage 6 – Purito Rodriguez

Joaquim Rodriguez is something of a spectacle when the mountain gets steep. This is a man who finished 5th in the Giro D’Italia and looks to be considering racing the Tour as well. Hey, J-Rod may not be able to time trial his way out of a paper bag, but he sure can climb. I guess it helps being 57kg (130lb) and the size of a Lord of the Rings character. He’s a personal favorite of mine and I hope his form can continue in the Grand Boucle.

Rodriguez answered an early attack by Alexander Vinokourov who tried to blow overall leader Braldey Wiggins off the mountain with about 6km to go. What initially looked dangerous was quickly nullified by J-Rod and then about a 1km later, Rodriguez dispatched of his Astanan riding partner and soloed to victory. Robert Gesink, who seemed eager to test himself against the others came over the line second 31 seconds behind and 8 seconds ahead of Jurgen Van Den Broeck. The big losers on the day were Samuel Sanchez at +3’10”, Janez Brajkovic (last year’s winner) at +3’55”! and Ivan Basso at +4’28”!
