Giro D’Italia – Stage 21 – Contador 2011 Giro Champion!

The final stage of the Giro D’Italia went today with the traditional time trial, this time 26km into Milano finishing on the footsteps of the Duomo. David Millar took the stage with and incredible ride, and the 2011 Giro Champ Alberto Contador came in in third place on the stage easily conserving his overall win.

For Contador, it’s 6 Grand Tour wins in 7 starts and he may ride the Tour de France later this year. Eddy Merckx, with 11, and Bernard Hinault, with 10, are the winningest Grand Tour riders in cycling history and although 4 or 5 more Grand Tours seem another career away, it somehow seems very within reach. What seems almost certain is that Contador looks likely to become the winningest Spaniard as he trails Indurain by only one Grand Tour who won 5 Tours and 2 Giros. Enjoy it, we could be watching one the best, and most complete, cyclists of an era.
