Giro D’Italia – Stage 18 – Fiesta Capecchi

Eros Capecchi, the young up and coming rider for Liquigas has won the first stage of the Giro D’Italia for his team. It came on a long three man break with compatriot Marco Pinotti (HTC) and Belgian Kevin Seeldrayers (Quickstep) where Capecchi edged out the two with a well-timed burst in the last 400m. For Capecchi, the win came as great relief as he admitted he has struggled with this year’s Giro and was on the verge of quitting the race.

The peloton, and the main protagonists of the race, seem to be conserving their gunpowder in anticipation of the epic stage 20 as they were content to allow the break a long leash and came in 6’04” behind the winners.
