Giro D’Italia – Stage 17 – Polemica Break

A break finally succeeded in the Giro today and it was Giovanni Visconti Diego Ulissi who won the 17th stage. The final sprint was overshadowed by an irregular approach as Ulissi seemed to cut left and block the path of the obviously faster Visconti. However, Visconti was disqulified for hitting Ulissi twice during the run-in. Caught behind the mess was Pablo Lastras who finished … umm…. second.

The long decents on today’s stage were a perfect fit for a attempted breakaway as the main group wouldn’t risk a crash chasing down the escapees. The break splintered down to just four men Visconti, Lastras, Ulissi, and Bakelandts who were literally fighting it out in the final km.
