John Gadret has won his first Giro D’Italia stage taking the 11th of this race by chasing down Daniel Moreno in the last km. Gadret, who had a very successful career in cyclocross, made the transition to road-racing in 2004 and once he signed to AG2R in 2006 he has established himself as a very talented road rider as well.
The undulating 11th stage looked like one in which a breakaway could be successful and with just 20km remaining it seemed likely as Daniel Moreno (Katusha) was alone well ahead of the peloton. Between the two was another group of some 6 riders including well placed Christophe Le Mevel (Garmin) and Ignatas Konovalovas (Movistar). With 15km remaining Konovalovas attacked his breakmates and went in search of Moreno whom he quickly caught and the duo worked together to make the break stick. However, the peloton, under control of Androni and Lampre hammered making up and unbelieveble time gap to catch the G2 group and have the breakaway duo in their sites with 1km remaining.
At this point, Moreno attacked again and looked good for the win, but John Gadret launched a massive dig and passed Moreno in the last 400m. The peloton surged after Gadret with Joaquim Rodriguez and Giovanni Visconti leading the chase, but Gadret prevailed. Alberto Contador safely defended his lead, but Christophe Le Mevel paid a little for his efforts losing 9 seconds and slipping to fourth in the GC.
