Angel Vicioso (Androni) has won the third stage of the Giro D’Italia with a tricky breakaway with five other riders. It looked to be set for a mass sprint finish like yest Cavendish was in trouble with 8.5km to go climbing up the Rapella when Christophe Le Mevel (Garmin), Pablo Lastras (Movistar), Angel Viciosco (Androni) and Daniel Moreno (Katusha) attacked. David Millar (Garmin) brodged the gap and caught the lead four with just 2km remaining. The five were able to hold the lead until the finish were it became a five-man-sprint and Vicioso came away with the win.
The stage was overshadowed by a horrible crash by Wouter Weylandt (Leopard) who had to have a defibrillator used and is to be transported to hospital in a helicopter after falling hard and hitting his face and head against the rock wall on the descent. Hopefully, he is ok after what looked to be a very bad fall as his condition sounds very serious.
A large group led in by Sacha Modolo came in 21 seconds later followed by a large group containing Cavendish came in trainling by 3’20.
