2011 Giro D’Italia – Stage 2 – Petacchi Powerhouse

The 37-year-old ageless wonder Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre) has won the first sprint stage of the Giro D’Italia, with a huge burst, beating Mark Cavendish to the line. Cavendish seemed to think that the sprint wasn’t legit as he was very animated after the celebration waving his finger at Petacchi in a disapproving fashion. Cavendish was perfectly placed as Garmin burned all their matches outside the final km and Renshaw took the lead with just over 300km to go. Renshaw tailed off, Petacchi launched right and Cav went left. Petacchi looked to have about three bike lengths when he took his line to the left with Cav ending up behind him. It was a straight drag and Petacchi held. I’ve seen many examples of impeding and this just wasn’t one. Petacchi took the line first, but Cav is in pink on bonus points for second place.
