2011 Giro D’Italia – Stage 1 ITT

HTC Highroad has won the first stage of the Giro, the Team Time Trial, with Marco Pinotti the first Maglia Rosa of the race. David Arroyo’s Team Movistar (pictured above) finished a mediocre 11th, but looked good doing it, that kit is really growing on me. For Arroyo, the highest placed returning rider from 2010, it’s an acceptable time. Omega Pharma set the first time of the day, third-fastest when the racing was done, and held a lead over half the teams finishing until HTC knocked them off the podium. Liquigas has also set a very good time, prepping Nibali well, last year’s third place rider, for the coming stages. Team Radioshack surprised with an impressive TTT and the second fastest time on the day. It was a bad day for Carlos Sastre and Denis Menchov as Team Geox finished near the bottom and as well for Igor Anton and his Euskaltel team, although the Euskies always seem to struggle in this discipline.
