Vuelta a Pais Vasco – Stage 4 – Sam San incredible

Sammy Sanchez has won an absolutely incredible stage of the Vuelta a Pais Vasco. This race is incredible, and this stage was without doubt the best day of stage racing thus far this year. In a stage full of future Tour de France competitors (A. Schleck, F. Schleck, Sammy Sanchez, Robert Gesink, Joaquim Rodriquez, Ryder Hesjedal, Xavier Tondo, Alexander Vinokourov and I’ve probably forgotten some) it was an epic battle up the 8.5% slopes of the Alto De Usartza to the finish.

First, Xavier Tondo launched a Carlos Sastre-esque attack from some 7km out which only Frank Schleck could respond to. Then it was Vinokourov, trying to bridge. Somehow, I don’t know how, they caught Tondo after he had dropped Frank and then Andy went. Vino responded, and Sammy attacked. They caught him and Andy went again with Vino and it looked over, but they were caught on the descent. Sammy attacked a final time and held it to take the stage and the overall lead with the same time as Kloden and Rodriguez.

Vuelta a Pais Vasco Stage 4 Top Three
1. Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel)____4h:42:34
2. Andreas Kloden (Radioshack)
3. Alexander Vinokourov (Astana)

Vuelta a Pais Vasco Overall Top Three
1. Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha)______17:12:46
2. Andreas Kloden (Radioshack)
3. Sammy Sanchez (Euskaltel)

EDIT: They still list Joaquim Rodriguez as the leader of the race… no idea why… that’s not consistent with the previous stages.
