Dwars door Vlaanderen
Nick Nuyens won the Dwars door Vlaanderen, a lesser known race in the Flanders warm-ups to the Ronde van Vlaanderen, but one that should be watched closely featuring 8 of 12 of the exact same climbs as de Ronde. These climbs in DDV order of appearance: Leberg (1.3km, 13% ramp), Valkenberg (530m, 12%), Eikenberg (1.2km, cobbled, 5% avg 9% ramp), Steenbekdries (300m, cobbled), Knokteberg (7% avg, 13% ramp), Oude Kwaremont (2.2km, 1.5km cobbled, 6%) and the killer Paterberg (20% ramp, cobbled, 12% avg.).
Nuyens got away in a break in the final km’s with Geraint Thomas and a Caja Rural rider. In the last two kms with the peloton chasing hard, Nuyens and Thomas had what was needed to hold off the surging group with Tyler Farrar finishing third in the sprint.

Volta a Catalunya
Alberto Contador dominated the long climb into Andorra, winning the first stage for Saxo Bank today, on a stage which was featured in the 2010 Tour de France won by Igor Anton. Where was Anton by the way? I thought he’d do well on this stage, or perhaps win, but he finished outside the top ten. No sign of Sastre or Menchov either. Perhaps all 3 are just targeting the Giro. Alberto Contador, Giro rival this year, however takes the lead in the overall classification in Catalunya.
