2011 Monte Paschi Strade Bianche – Gilbert prevails

Philippe Gilbert has begun the season the same way he ended it last year with a dominant performance in one of the years premium one-day classics. The Italian roads are kind to Gilbert, who won in dominating fashion in last years Tour of Lombardy. Today, Gilbert took control of the race leading to a 20 man break and from there the group worked together to get all the advantage they needed.

Once in the windy tight streets of Sienna, the race got very nervous and Alessandro Ballan launched an attack that Gilbert waited on until 250m when he unleashed a massive burst on the inside. From there it was all Gilbert as he powered away from a cautious Ballan and a tenacious Cunego, the later who held on for third.
