Ben Swift took the second stage of the Santos Tour Down Under in a very closely contended sprint, with Robbie McEwen finishing second and moving into first overall. The 146km second stage from Tailem Bend to Mannum, was the longest in this year’s race cresting Dawesley Hill along the route. Perhaps, with early season fatigue and race jitters combining, the racers were less sharp than usual as today’s stage was a crash-filled affair with numerous riders including Mark Cavendish, Tyler Farrar, Andre Griepel and Geraint Thomas all hitting the pavement. Or maybe it had something to do with gravel in the final hair pin corner outside of 3km. Either way, early season racing is always a bit dicey and with Sulzberger withdrawing and Cavendish receiving treatment for a nasty gash above his eye and his shoulder looking out of sorts, it appears they got the worst of it.
