2010 Tour de Carnage – Stage 2

Sylvain Chavanel has rode himself into the yellow jersey in ideal Belgian style, with no one else in the photo, with cobbles, narrow twisting descents and short punchy classics climbs. Chavanel, is the first Frenchman to wear the yellow jersey since the 2008 Tour when Romain Feillu claimed it on the third stage as well and wore yellow for one day.

The race was seeming to unfold in a normal fashion but once poor weather, wet cobbles and techincal descents were mixed together, the chaos unfolded. Two motorcycles went down along with Andy Schleck, Fränk Schleck, Lance Armstrong, Ivan Basso, Christian Vandevelde and Alessandro Petacchi amongst others. Fränk and Andy were trailing the yellow jersey group by as much as two minutes at one point, but with the help of Jens Voigt they turned themselves inside out to finish with the group. Damiano Cunego (+8:51) and Vandevelde (+9:49), who crossed the line bloodied and with a black eye, were not so lucky. Other GC favorites Contador, Menchov, Sastre, Evans and Bradley Wiggins seemed to get through unharmed.
