2010 Tour de France – Stage 1

Alessandro Petacchi has won the first stage of the Tour de France over Mark Renshaw and Thor Hushovd. In what was a demolition derby finish, complete with two crashes, Petacchi and Hushovd showed their savvy in avoiding the drama and sprinting for the win. The nightmare season continues however for Mark Cavendish. Having just been blamed for taking out Heinrich Haussler in a Tour de Suisse sprint, and both Haussler and Boonen out of the tour with resulting injuries, Cavendish now seems to have caused the first big crash in the Tour leaning hard left on a Lampre rider going through a right hand bend. This crash seems to have left Oscar Freire in a great deal of pain, although he did finish.
