Tour of Romandie – Stage 3 TT

Richie Porte has won the individual time trial third stage of the Tour of Romandie. If feels as if we just had a time trial yesterday, but in fact, it was Tuesday with the opening prologue. Porte, a first year pro with Team Saxo Bank has made the transition to road racing through triathlon, so with his TT win at last year’s baby Giro, it should be no surprise that he is fast on the aero machine. Porte was far behind through the uphill section but turned on the jets in the downhill last half even passing Thibault Pinot who went out before him.

2. Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d’Epargne)_31:20
3. Vladimir Karperts (Katusha)__________31:21

Finishing in second place was Alejandro Valverde, followed by Karpets in third and Mick Rogers in fourth, the latter of who moved in the overall GC lead. Valverde trails Rogers by 2 seconds and perhaps has the advantage in the two final stages which are hilly to say the least. Karpets is not in third on the strength of his TT five seconds behind the leader, and the always dangerous Menchov is also in the mix in 5th, 9 seconds behind Rogers. I’m prone to think that Valverde has the most to race for at this point in the season, and his career, so we’ll see if the others, such as Menchov, have the form or even care about engaging him in battle.
