Columbian rider Jose Serpa (Androni Giocattoli) has won the second stage of the Coppi e Bartali over Italians Fortunato Baliani and Ricardo Ricco. A small break of six riders formed on the Monte Trebbio climb which proved to be decisive in the stage win. Ricco seemed motivated to prove himself after a 20 month doping violation as well as the exclusion of his Ceramica Flaminia team from the Giro D’Italia in May. He attacked repeatedly during the stage but came up just short of the win in the end.
