Vuelta a Murcia – Stages 1 & 2

In a bizarre set of coincidences, the South African Robbie Hunter, has won both the first and second stages of the Vuelta a Murcia in southeastern Spain. The second stage, which was seemingly a duplicate of the first stage ended with the same 3 riders, in the same order, in the top three as the finishing times of the first two stages were also within 5 minutes of one another.

The regional race in Murcia, which is the home region of Alejandro Valverde, has come under intense scrutiny for it’s management practices and has been avoided out of protest by many of the larger Spanish teams, such as Valverde’s Caisse d’Epargne team.

In a somewhat ironic twist, race organizers forbid Italian teams from participating in the Vuelta because of CONI’s doping claims against the Murcian rider Valverde. Because of this, the majority of the teams in the Spanish 5-day event are unusally from countries other than the two Mediterranean giants Spain and Italy. The field consists of primarily teams from Central Europe (Milram, German National, Team Netapp, Rabobank, Vacansoleil, Cervelo and CCC Polsat) the USA (Columbia, Garmin and RadioShack) and Great Britain (Sky and Endura). Only two of the 16 teams competing are actually Spanish (The national team and Caja Rural).
