It’s been busy around here and I’m a little behind. A short 4 day Giro di Calabria was running from Jan.30 – Feb.2 with some notables in attendance. Alessandro Petacchi, now riding for Lampre, and Michael Rasmussen, now riding for Miche, were the big names, with Giovanni Visconti rounding out the top draws.
The 2.1 Giro is the first UCI race in Europe for 2010 and at 697km it was short but had some nasty wet and cold weather. The race had a little of everything with a couple of sprint finishes, a hilly third stage, and a breakaway win on the first stage for Matteo Montaguti which eventually became the overall victory as well.
Petacchi looked to have excellent early season for winning both Sprint stages and finishing second on the hilly third stage. He looks primed to make some noise in the Milan-San Remo and likely in the Giro D’Italia as well.
