Luca Paolini outfoxes Stijn Vandenbergh to win Omloop

PaoliniOmloop

Luca Paolini showed his veteran instincts winning the opening cobble semi-classic of the year – The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Paolini and Vandenbergh casually eased away from the 12 man break group with around 20km to go and craftily, and rather slowly created a gap that didn’t look threatening until it was. Vandenbergh, who isn’t exactly a rookie at 28, looked a little overwhelmed with his fortunate position and appeared to be happy to take long turns pulling the duo, and didn’t have much left to respond when the final sprint came from Paolini. Sven Vandousselaerre rounded out the podium winning the sprint for third ahead of Geraint Thomas.

PS for the locals: I caught the race at Musette Caffe and tried out the breakfast. Excellent. A good turn out as well. Make sure you’re there for Milan San Remo!

  1. Glad to see Paolini pick up a rare victory. He always seems to be floating around the top end of the results, but never really has had enough to break through on a consistent basis.

I watched from work in French (don’t tell my boss) the video quality was quite good for a change. I remember enough French from high school to understand what the are talking about. Does Mussette have it in English?

Sportsnet is rebroadcasting the race on Sportsnet 1 in HD Sunday, along with Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. Worth setting the PVR if you are equipped.

    1. Oh, we don’t have pvr… or a tv for that matter. Darn. Yeah,, Musette had it in english, but I don’t think they’re doing KBK tomorrow. They do however have great coffee and now breakfast so I think that’ll be my destination for the bigger classics anyway.
